About AYS
Hi and welcome to A Young Scientist. I’m your host, Jerry Hornak.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have been (and still am) a full-time children’s magician for over thirty years, full-time since 1989.
I consider it a gift to be able to make children laugh so easily It’s a job I love and it’s provided a good life for me and my family.
That’s enough about my magic biz for now. You can read more about it on my other website, JerrysMagic.com if you’re interested.
I just want to make it clear that I’m not a science teacher or a science professional (my degree is in something totally unrelated.)
But I do have a science teacher inside me that’s been trying to get out for years!
In addition to the after-school magic classes that I teach at local elementary schools, I developed my own Magic of Science classes that are a very big hit with student and parents alike.
I have my own three-foot Van De Graaff generator to make hair stand on end. I share how cool magnets can be (and then share my bag of magnets, so every student has one to take home.) We have classes on light and sound and chemistry and astronomy, too, and they always get something to take home and show their parents.
It’s a class that’s the best of both worlds… educational and fun!
But there are only just so many students I can see in each six-week program. And only three schools per session that I can schedule (I did one school each day of the week one time when I first started doing these and that was just a liiiiiiiitle too busy for me.)
I wanted a wider audience of children to discover how much fun science can be, with experiments to try that they haven’t seen yet.
How can you reach the world without leaving your home? Ah! The internet!
And so, I present to you, A Young Scientist!
This site is still new and growing and I invite you to join the AYS email list for my Occasional Newsletter. I’ll be providing easy and fun experiments you can do with your own young scientist, along with tips on encouraging that love of science.
Please bookmark AYS now so you can visit later and I hope you’ll share this site with your friends.
Your input is welcome and I’d love to hear your ideas. Please email questions and comments to aysmail at ayoungscientist.com (anti-spam trick… you know what to do here!)
Thank you for being here at the start of AYS!
Best wishes,
Jerry
P.S. If you live in Western Connecticut or Westchester County, NY, you might consider my Birthday Science Show for your own young scientist’s next party. They’ll love it!
You’ll find complete details at JerrysScience.com. Thanks!
